Art is not what you see but what you make others see…Edgar Degas

I rather like this quote by Degas. As someone who’s always loved the works of Kandinsky, Dali, Picasso, Magritte (to name just a few) I’ve always found it fascinating what I see in their art – sometimes what I see isn’t what the ‘experts’ say is what I should and other times I totally ‘get’ it…the wonder of art is indeed that it means something different to every person.

This week I finished a trio of paintings I’ve made for my niece as a little Christmas surprise pressie. I wanted to create something a bit different and have tried to produce pieces to suit every mood that a young lady heading into her teens may have…

  1. The gilt antique with golden heart…for that glamorous ‘I feel the need to be surrounded by luxury and pampered’ mood.
  2. The 60/70s psychedelic flower power style for when she’s feeling on top of the world and full of smiles.
  3. The simple silver flutterbye in the summer sky…for those moments when she needs calmness and serenity to see her through.
  • It’s hard to know if your art is going to connect with anyone else and will she see in these pieces of art the same moods and feels that I’ve tried to convey? Only time will tell…I just hope that, whatever she does see, she likes them.
